This oddly-coloured Nissan is further proof that we should stop buying grey cars

Nissan wants to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the production facility in Sunderland, UK in style with an odd – and oddly fascinating – Bluebird elektromod with psychedelic paint. They actually call it the ‘Newbird’ because it’s built on a Bluebird but it utilises a 40 kWh battery pack and inverter borrowed from a Nissan Leaf.

The bad news is this car is technically not road legal (it should be) and there’s more bad news because performance-wise, this isn’t exactly a game changer: it does 0-60 in 15 seconds, which would be considered sluggish with a petrol engine, but it is slower than continental drift with an electric engine. The range is not great either, as the Newbird can only travel up to 130 miles on a charge.

Nissan opened the Sunderland plant in 1986 and over 10 million vehicles have left the factory since. And this is one of ’em.
