I remember the moment I learnt about the existence of Virgil Abloh, clear as day, I was having a drink with a friend – she works as a stylist – and she airdropped a picture of a pair of Off-White Converse – they were actually transparent – and I thought they were ultra-cool. I tried googling ‘Virgil Abloh Converse’ – silly me – I actually thought I could afford them. I couldn’t. And they were sold-out anyway.
Abloh invented – pretty much from scratch – and entirely different design language that made him immediately recognisable. Off white, blue and orange. Clean lines. Lettering. And a lot of it. Laces that actually say ‘laces’ on them.
Mercedes teamed up with Abloh for the Geländewagen project, which is the most Abloh thing that ever Ablohed. It’s unique. A modern work of art. You look at it and you think, “this is odd”, and then you think “I want one.”
Abloh was one of those people that change the game they play. Like Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, and Marilyn Monroe. We’re into cars so what we have, what we will retain, is the heritage and legacy of his Geländewagen.
