Surprise surprise, Norway is bleeding tax money because people aren’t buying petrol and diesel cars anymore, which are heavily taxed, and are only buying EVs, which are not.
In October 2021, nearly 96% of all new cars sold were electric. In terms of the circulating fleet, 7 out of 10 cars on the road are EVs.
Norway says it’s lost about 19.2 bln Kronas ($2.09bln, €1.92bln, £1.58bln) because 7 out of 10 new cars are electric, and that number has been going up for years.
Back in 2017, Norway cancelled the 100% discount on road tolls that EV owners benefited from, and the government is now considering reintroducing some form of ownership tax on EVs.
This is both funny and unfunny.
