Much like McDonald’s famously makes more money renting out properties to franchisee than selling burgers, Amazon makes a lot more than from AWS – Amazon Web Services – than it does from delivering stuff.
Rivian – the former EV start-up turned public car company ($RIVN) – chose Amazon ($AMZN) Web Services for things cloud analytics and cloud services, which they’re essentially going to be using to improve the performance of Rivian vehicles and provide over-the-air updates.
No surprise there, by the way, Amazon has given Rivian a looooot of cash (through funding), and Rivian has signed a deal to deliver (pun intended) 10,000 Rivian vans by the end of 2022. So.. who else were they (Rivian) going to team up with for their cloud services?
Cars used to be cars, with oil and carburettors and mechanical stuff. But they’re now smartphone on wheels. They’re technological assets, not mechanical ones. It’s a bit weird, and unsettling, and I’m already beginning to miss the sound of a V10. But we’ll get used to it.
