A few years ago I briefly worked as a chauffeur, which means I would spend 12-14 hours a day, every day, sitting in a Jaguar XF or a Mercedes V-Class. I guess most would be surprised to know that I’d take the van over the Jag any day of the week.
It was a 2008 V-Class, I think the correct name is ‘Viano’, and it was amazingly comfortable, much faster than you think, and ultimately easier to drive around and park than you’d assume. If I had the cash, and I had to pick the perfect 3-vehicle garage, I’d have a supercar, a hatchback and a van, no doubt. And the van I’d get would wear a Mercedes-Benz emblem.
‘My’ van had a throaty, and torquey, diesel engine but as you can you imagine, modern vans are powered by an inevitable electric powertrain and in the case of the eVito you see here, power is provided by a 60 kWh battery pack, good enough for a WLTP-tested range of 242-314 km (150-195 mi). The electric unit sends 116 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels.
The van is shorter than I thought, 5.14 mt for the regular model and 5.37 mt for the ‘extra-long’ version, and it’s equipped with heated seats, 17-inch wheels and a bunch of ADAS.
*This is the Vito, the commercial van, but there’s also a Viano, which is basically the passenger van. And like I said, if I could, I would.
