Toyota has been slamming the GR (Gazoo Racing) badge on just about anything and everything in recent months and the Hilux, arguably the brand’s most iconic truck, is not exempt. Despite the GR Sport name, this new Hilux is basically the same as the regular one, it’s just cooler.
The engine is a 2.8-litre diesel, delivering 201 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque, enough to tow up to 3.5 tonne of payload, courtesy of a new suspension system inspired by the same system that was used in the Dakar-winning Hilux.
We all love the Hilux, chiefly (I suspect) because we’ve seen it on Top Gear. But also because it’s a great truck. And if Toyota wants to make it cooler with a GR badge, well, I’m not complaining.
