It’s perhaps a bit sad but cars are becoming smartphone on wheels, defined by their software and their tech, not by their engines. The auto market per se is struggling, but the tech aspect of it is thriving. Mercedes-Benz, for example, has partnered up with LG Electronics to develop the infotainment system in the EQS.
The giant MBUX hyperscreen, a 56-inch screen which incorporates three different displays (Instrument Cluster Display, Central Information Display and Co-Driver Display), is currently only available for the EQS but sooner or later, I’m sure, they’ll use it for other models as well.
This is just of many partnerships involving an automaker and a tech company and as we progress and transition towards a mobility that’s increasingly autonomous and electric, it’ll be interesting to see what’s gonna happen to companies like ZF, one of the largest manufacturers of transmissions. I guess they’ll have to adapt. We all do.
