News → Fiat 500 Riva

I know I’m always banging on about Clarkson but please understand. He’s the Jimi Hendrix, the Pelè, the Michael Jordan of motoring journalism. There used to be motoring journalism and car writing, and then he came along. And it became something else. Clarkson has often said, including in his 2004 book I Know You Got Soul, that the “Riva Aquarama is man’s most beautiful creation”. Then, in 2011 another, much less successful and much less famous car writer, that’d be me, said that the Fiat 500 C is “mini supercar with a pug nose“.

Fiat, which seemed to have taken on marketing lessons recently, has taken their flagship mini stylish supercar, the new Fiat 500, and arguably Italy’s most beautiful machine ever, the Riva Aquarama.

You can buy it already (in Italy, that is) and prices start at 17,900 € (around 14,900 £ or $ 19,900). It’s available with the 1,2 litre 69 HP petrol/gasoline engine and the 1,3 litre multijet with 95 HP. You can have it in “Blu sera” (night blue) colour and, as you would expect, the cabin is a triumph of wood.

Italy and the Italians have often been accused of following a form-over-function credo. Style always comes first. A good point, to a point. Each to their own, as they say, but surely, this proves that the Italians know how to make something beautiful.
