What is the ‘BMW eDrive zone’ and does your city have one?

BMW Group has devised something called the ‘eDrive Zone’, which is now available in 138 cities in 20 European countries.

It is basically a service that they offer, using technology that allows plug-in hybrid BMWs to automatically switch to all-electric driving mode upon entering inner city areas, thus reducing emissions and of course helping you save some cash.

The car recognises the designated eDrive Zones using geofencing technology and GPS, and it uses to eDrive system to switch to EV mode. And you actually get paid for that: you get bonus points for each km (0.60 mi) you drive in all-electric mode, and you can use then redeem those points in exchange for charging credits.

BMW says, in the Q2 (2021) alone, vehicles using this system have covered around 3.3m km (2.05 mi) in EV mode, and over the last 14 months (the system was launched in the Summer of 2020), BMW owners collected 150 million points and redeemed the equivalent of 2.9 gigawatt hours of charging power.
