If there’s a product, there’s a market. If there’s a market, there are collectors and enthusiasts. If there are collectors and enthusiasts, you’ll see things that make very little sense. And I’ll give you two examples: a lot of petrolheads, including myself, are obsessed with Dacia. And I’m personally obsessed with Genesis.
Genesis started out as a semi-independent, semi-luxurious sub-division for Hyundai but it quickly grew up, thrived and became a standalone brand, and it can stand on its own two feet – well, four wheels – because it ticks two important boxes: it has a very clear brand identity and it gives you value for your money.
The G90 sedan, for example, is priced from $70,000 in the U.S., but I think – and I know I’m gonna get a lot of s**t for saying this in the comments – it rivals the S-Class and the Audi A8. Except it’s got more personality and it looks better.
I even like Genesis’ signature Crest Grille with the two-line headlamps. Proof you can fit a car with a large grille and make it ugly. It’s long, slender, elegant. And the interior is beautifully refined and fitted with a touchscreen that’s well integrated into the dashboard. If this were a Mercedes, it would available in 7,000,000 different shades of grey, burgundy, blue, white and that’s about it. But because this is Genesis, you can have it Hallasan Green, Capri Blue, Bariloche Brown, Valencia Gold, Tasman Blue, along with other grey and white options.
Genesis said an electrified and/or electric version is in the making, but at the moment, the engine under the long hood of this car is a simple, no-nonsense twin-turbo 3.5 L V6, delivering 375 hp.
