Renault is launching a new SUV soon, ideally slotted and marketed between the Captur and the Kadjar, and it’s called Austral. The name is cool, but what about the car?
At the moment, we only know that the French company has been testing a total of 100 prototypes around Europe (France, Romania, Spain and Germany, mostly), putting a grand total of 2 million km under the wheels of these prototypes.
It’s based on a brand-new, EV-friendly platform called CMF-CD3 platform but it’ll be available as an EV, as an E-Tech hybrid with a 1.3-litre petrol + 12V motor, or a a mild hybrid with a 1.2-litre petrol with a 48V motor. The most powerful version, according to Renault, will deliver 200 hp.
A couple of days ago I talked about the upcoming Mercedes EQE SUV and I said that even with the camo wrap, it looked underwhelming. I’m not sure I can say the same about the Austral, but it does look a lot like a slightly boxier, and smaller Kadjar. I’ll leave it up to you to decide whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
