The New York Police Department has already placed an order for 184 Ford Mustang Mach E cars, which will be used to patrol the streets of NYC and according to Bloomberg, the NYPD is also considering adding 250 Tesla cars to its fleet.
This is a controversial conversation. Like two sides of the same coin. On one side, the NYPD, just like most institutions and/or companies, wants to transition towards electric mobility to reduce its carbon footprint, but on the other side of the coin, many believe that EVs can’t and shouldn’t be used by police officers, mainly because the range is not good enough and they argue that there’s a risk of running out of juice while chasing the ‘baddie’.
I think both sides have a point but, when all is said and done, I agree: it’s too early. The NYPD should stick to modern versions of the same cars they’ve been using and in the near future, when EVs come with better range, we can talk about it again. Just my 2 cents. What do you think?
