In 2017, 2018 and 2019 I went to Los Angeles for the LA Auto Show and the first two days (of four in total) were dedicated to tech, hackatons and stuff like that. I wasn’t really paying attention, I was just there for the free cookies, but I should have. You live, and you learn. I guess.
The reason I mention this is that technology is going to be increasingly important in the automotive sectors as cars begin to look like smartphone on wheels. And I don’t mean to diminish the trend or emphasise it, it is what it is.
Back in 2018, Volvo set up an investment fund dubbed ‘Volvo Cars Tech Fund’, which they use to get out of their own way to look for interesting tech companies to invest in. The latest start-up to receive funding from Volvo is called Spectralis, based out of Israel.
Spectralis specialises in imaging and optical technologies – both software and hardware – including something they call the ‘Multi Layer Thin Combiner’ (MLTC), a new type of optical film that you can apply on different shapes and surfaces, and can be used to relay information and images through glass.
You can use it for the windshield, for example, and it would serve as a magnified and glorified head-up display.
